Managing Teething Discomfort

Little blonde boy sucking on his thumbTeething is an important milestone in a baby's development, but it can be a challenge for infants and their caregivers. As new teeth emerge, babies often experience discomfort. They can become fussy, it may disturb their sleep, and can change eating habits. Effective teething discomfort management soothes the baby and makes things easier for everyone. At Jacobsen Pediatric Dentistry we want to help you and your baby through this exciting new time.

Understanding Teething

Teething typically begins around six months of age. The process continues until all 20 primary teeth have emerged, usually by the age of three. Common signs of teething include:
•  Increased drooling
•  Swollen, tender gums
•  Irritability and fussiness
•  Difficulty sleeping
•  Loss of appetite
•  Desire to chew on hard objects

It's important to note that severe symptoms like high fever, diarrhea, or rash may not necessarily be associated with teething and may indicate other health issues.

Safe and Effective Discomfort Relief Strategies

There are several simple solutions to typical teething discomfort. Here are examples of some of them.

Gum Massage

Gently rub your baby's gums with a clean finger to provide relief. The pressure helps counteract the discomfort.

Cold Therapy

Chilled items can numb the gums and reduce inflammation:
•  Refrigerate (don't freeze) a damp washcloth or teething ring for your baby to chew on.
•  Offer cold foods like yogurt or applesauce to babies who have started solid foods.

Teething Toys

Provide safe, proven, and age-appropriate teething toys for your baby to bite and chew on.

Distraction

Taking the baby's mind off their discomfort is very effective. Engage them in play, go for a walk, or introduce a new toy. Any activity is helpful with teething.

Extra Cuddles

Increased comfort and attention from parents and caregivers can soothe a teething baby.

Natural Remedies

Some parents find the following natural remedies helpful:
•  Use chamomile tea to dampen a washcloth for chewing to soothe gums.
•  Frozen breast milk can be a soothing treat.

What to Avoid

We encourage you to please avoid these risky teething relief methods.

Teething Necklaces

These pose a strangulation and choking hazard and should not be used.

Teething Gels with Benzocaine

The Food and Drug Adminstration (FDA) warns against the use of over-the-counter teething products that contain benzocaine due to rare but serious side effects.

Homeopathic Teething Tablets

Some of these products have been found to contain inconsistent amounts of potentially harmful ingredients.

Hard Foods

Chewing is soothing for a teething baby, but avoid hard foods that could break into a choking hazard.

Oral Hygiene Maintenance

Even before teeth emerge, it's important to help your baby maintain good oral hygiene.
•  Wipe gums with a soft, damp cloth after feedings. Pressure on the gums helps alleviate teething discomfort.
•  Once teeth appear, brush gently with an infant toothbrush.
•  Please note that putting a baby to bed with a bottle of milk or juice may lead to tooth decay.

If your baby's first tooth has erupted, it's time for their first dental appointment. Regular dentist visits early in life are the foundation of oral health. Contact us at (971) 459-2431 to schedule an appointment.
